- A shulker box holds 27 stacks = 1,728 items.
- For 16-stack items like ender pearls, it's 432.
- Items ÷ 64 = slots. Slots ÷ 27 = shulkers. Always round up.
"How many shulkers is that?" comes up every time you empty a farm or plan a big build. Here are all the numbers in one place.
How much fits where
A shulker box holds exactly the same as a normal chest. The difference: it keeps its items when you break it, so you can carry the whole thing.
Not everything stacks to 64
| Stack size | Examples | Per shulker |
|---|---|---|
| 64 | Most blocks and items | 1,728 |
| 16 | Ender pearls, snowballs, eggs, signs, empty buckets | 432 |
| 1 | Tools, weapons, armour, potions, full buckets | 27 |
Shulkers inside chests
You can't put a shulker box inside another shulker box (or a bundle). Any other container is fine, and that's where storage gets huge.
Do the maths yourself
- Items ÷ 64 (or ÷ 16 for 16-stack items). Round up. That's your slots.
- Slots ÷ 27. Round up. That's your shulker boxes.
10,000 stone
10,000 ÷ 64 = 156.25, so 157 slots. Then 157 ÷ 27 = 5.8, so 6 shulkers (five full, one with 22 stacks).
500 ender pearls
500 ÷ 16 = 31.25, so 32 slots. That's 2 shulkers, because one only fits 432 pearls.
3 double chests of iron
Each double chest = 2 shulkers' worth, so you need 6 shulkers.
Planning a build with lots of blocks? The materials planner adds it all up for you.
Getting more shulker boxes
1 shulker box = 1 chest + 2 shulker shells. Shells drop from shulkers in End cities:
- Java: 50% chance per shulker, up to 68.75% with Looting III.
- Bedrock: 0 to 1 shells per shulker, up to 4 with Looting III.
Cheat sheet
- 1 shulker = 27 stacks = 1,728 blocks
- 1 double chest = 2 shulkers' worth = 3,456 blocks
- 16-stack items: 432 per shulker
- Round up at every step, for every block
