Minecraft Nether Portal Calculator

One block in the Nether equals eight in the Overworld. Divide Overworld X and Z by 8 to find your portal spot.

One block in the Nether is eight in the Overworld. Convert X and Z coordinates to a target in the other dimension. Portal linking also depends on height and nearby portals, so the converted coordinates do not guarantee a connection.

FAQ

How do Nether coordinates work?

Divide Overworld X and Z by 8 to get Nether coordinates, and multiply by 8 to go back. Y stays the same.

Why did my portal link to the wrong place?

The game links to the nearest existing portal within range. Build the second portal at the exact converted coordinates to stop that.

Does the Y level change between the Overworld and the Nether?

No. Only the X and Z coordinates are scaled by 8. Y stays the same, but the Nether ceiling is at Y 128.

How far apart should Nether portals be?

Keep Overworld portals more than 128 blocks apart so each links to its own Nether portal.
