Axolotl Guide

Catch one in a bucket and it'll fight drowned for you.

A bucket of axolotl surrounded by a bucket of tropical fish, a water bucket, clay and an axolotl spawn egg on moss
Quick answer
  • Axolotls live underwater in lush caves, near clay.
  • Catch one with a Water bucket. Breed them with a Bucket of tropical fish.
  • Blue axolotls are a 1 in 1,200 chance when breeding.

Axolotls are cute, but they're also useful. They hunt drowned and guardians, and help you heal while you fight.

Where to find them

Look in the water pools of lush caves. They only spawn where there's clay less than 5 blocks below the water.

Catching and breeding

  1. Use a water bucket on an axolotl to scoop it up.
  2. Catch a tropical fish in another water bucket.
  3. Feed buckets of tropical fish to two axolotls to breed them.
Keep them wetAxolotls dry out and die after about 5 minutes out of water.

Colours

There are 5 colours: pink, brown, gold, cyan and blue. Blue never spawns naturally. Every baby has a 1 in 1,200 chance of being blue.

Fighting buddies

Axolotls attack drowned, guardians, elder guardians, squid and fish. When a mob they're fighting dies, you get Regeneration and they clear your Mining Fatigue.

Monument raidsBring a few axolotls in buckets to an ocean monument. They fight guardians and remove the elder guardians' Mining Fatigue.

When an axolotl gets hurt, it sometimes plays dead for 10 seconds to heal.
