Badlands Guide

Free terracotta and gold near the surface.

Red sand, terracotta, gold ore, a cactus and a dead bush on orange terracotta
Quick answer
  • Badlands are dry biomes made of red sand and layers of coloured terracotta.
  • Gold ore spawns much higher here, so you'll find it near the surface.
  • Mineshafts can appear above ground.

Badlands look like a desert canyon. They're one of the best places for gold and building blocks.

Ore DistributionFind the best Y level for diamonds, iron, gold, redstone, copper and every ore

The three types

TypeWhat it looks like
BadlandsPlains of red sand and terracotta hills
Wooded badlandsPlateaus with oak trees and coarse dirt on top
Eroded badlandsTall terracotta spires

Gold

In other biomes, Gold ore stays deep underground. In badlands, extra gold ore spawns all the way up to the surface, so look for it in cliffs.

Terracotta

The hills are made of plain, red, orange, yellow, brown, white and light gray terracotta. It's a quick way to get lots of colourful blocks without dye.

What else is there

  • Mineshafts with dark oak supports, sometimes above ground.
  • Cactus and Dead bush plants.
  • Armadillos, which drop scutes for wolf armour.
No rainIt never rains in badlands, so it's not a good place for thunderstorm tricks.
