How to Build Perfect Circles and Domes

Stop guessing. Copy a pattern, one layer at a time.

Quick answer
  • Minecraft is made of squares, so circles are built from steps that follow a set pattern.
  • Use an odd diameter (like 15 or 21) if you want a single centre block.
  • For a dome, build a sphere one layer at a time and stop halfway.

Wonky circles ruin a good build. The trick is to stop guessing and copy a pattern, layer by layer.

Odd or even?

Odddiameter: 1 centre block, easy to line up with doors and paths
Evendiameter: centre is a 2×2, good for 2-wide paths

Pick the diameter first. Most builds look best with an odd number, because everything can line up with one middle block.

How to build a circle

  1. Mark the centre block (or the 2×2 centre for even sizes).
  2. Count out the radius in 4 directions (north, south, east, west) and place a block at each end.
  3. Build one quarter of the circle from the generator's pattern, going row by row.
  4. Mirror that quarter into the other 3. Every circle is symmetrical, so you only need to read one part.
Use a marker blockBuild the outline in something bright like wool first. Swap it for your real block once it looks right.

Domes and spheres

A sphere is just a stack of circles that get smaller towards the top and bottom.

  1. Pick the diameter of the sphere.
  2. Build the widest layer first. For a dome, that's your floor.
  3. Go up one block and build the next layer's circle. Repeat until you reach the top.
Shells save blocksYou only need the outer ring of each layer. Leave the inside hollow and you'll use a fraction of the blocks.

Building big

  • Use scaffolding to reach high layers safely, then break it from the bottom.
  • Build domes from glass for a greenhouse look, or mix in a few accent blocks for texture.
  • For huge circles, place the 4 end points first so you can check the size from far away.

Cheat sheet

  • Odd diameter = one centre block
  • Build one quarter, then mirror it
  • Sphere = stacked circles; dome = top half
  • Hollow shells use way fewer blocks
