Minecraft Difficulty Explained

What really changes when you turn the difficulty up.

A zombie head surrounded by a skeleton skull, a golden apple, rotten flesh and an oak door on cobblestone
Quick answer
  • Peaceful: no hostile mobs, no hunger, fast healing.
  • Hard: mobs hit 50% harder than Normal and starving can kill you.
  • Hardcore is always locked to Hard.

Difficulty changes more than how hard mobs hit. Here's everything that's different.

Peaceful

Hostile mobs don't spawn, your hunger never goes down and health comes back fast. It's good for building, but some items, like gunpowder and blaze rods, are much harder to get.

Hard

On Hard, zombies can break wooden doors, so use iron doors or put blocks in front. Zombies also always turn villagers into zombie villagers, which is useful for cheap trades.

Curing trickSwitch to Hard before letting a zombie attack your villagers, so they turn into zombie villagers you can cure.

Regional difficulty

The game also gets harder the longer you spend in one area, and on a full moon. Mobs there wear more armour and get more enchantments.

HardcoreHardcore is locked to Hard, with one life. Everything in the Hard column applies.
