- Elytra are only found in End ships, next to some End cities.
- They last 7 minutes 12 seconds of gliding, or about 28 minutes with Unbreaking III.
- They never fully break. Repair them with Mending or
phantom membranes.
Elytra turn the whole world into a fast-travel map. Here's how to get them, keep them working and not crash into a wall.
Where to find them
- Beat the Ender Dragon. An End gateway appears.
- Throw an
ender pearl into the gateway to reach the outer islands. - Find an End city with a floating End ship next to it.
- The elytra hang in an
item frame inside the ship. A shulker guards it.
Not every city has a shipOnly some End cities spawn a ship. Keep exploring if the first one doesn't.
Durability
432durability (433 on Bedrock)
7:12minutes of gliding
~28:48minutes with Unbreaking III
Elytra lose 1 durability per second of gliding. Firework rockets don't cost any. At 1 durability they stop working but don't disappear.
Repairing
- Mending: repairs as you collect XP. The best option.
Phantom membranes in an anvil: each one restores 25%.- Two elytra in a crafting grid combine their durability.
Flying with rockets
Use a
firework rocket while gliding for a big speed boost. Craft them with paper and gunpowder.
Never use rockets with starsRockets crafted with firework stars explode and hurt you. Use plain paper and gunpowder only.
Not crashing
- Flying into a wall fast deals damage, and it can kill you.
- Feather Falling doesn't reduce crash damage.
- Look up slightly before landing to slow down.
Hardcore pilotsCrashing is one of the most common elytra deaths. Fly high, avoid caves and narrow valleys, and carry a totem in your off-hand on long trips.
