Enchanting Table Setup

15 bookshelves, one gap and level 30. That's the max.

An enchanting table surrounded by lapis lazuli, a book, obsidian and a diamond on bookshelves
Quick answer
  • Craft an Enchanting table from 1 book, 2 diamonds and 4 obsidian.
  • Place 15 bookshelves around it with a 1 block gap to unlock level 30 enchantments.
  • A level 30 enchant only costs 3 levels and 3 lapis.

Without bookshelves, the enchanting table only gives weak enchantments. Set it up properly once and you're done for the whole game.

Placing the bookshelves

  1. Place the table.
  2. Leave a 1 block gap of air all around it.
  3. Place Bookshelf blocks around the gap, on the same level as the table or one block higher.
  4. Use 15 in total. More than 15 does nothing.
Keep the gap clearA torch or most other blocks in the gap cut off a bookshelf. Leave the gap as air.

What the numbers mean

Each of the three options shows a level number and needs 1, 2 or 3 Lapis lazuli.

30levels needed to see the best option
3levels it actually costs
3lapis it costs

The big number is the level you need to have. You only pay 1 to 3 levels.

Rerolling bad options

Hovering over an option shows one of the enchantments you'll get. Don't like it? On Java, the options stay the same until you enchant something. Enchant a cheap item, like a Book, with the 1 level option to get a new set.

Turn shelves offWant low level enchantments on purpose? Block some bookshelves with a block in the gap.
