How to Deal With Endermen

Don't look them in the eyes. And if you do, find water.

An ender pearl surrounded by a carved pumpkin, a water bucket, a snowball and a grass block on end stone
Quick answer
  • Endermen attack if you look at their face or hit them.
  • Wear a Carved pumpkin on your head and they won't notice you looking.
  • They take damage from water and can't fit under a 2 block high roof.

Endermen are tall, fast and hit hard, but they're also the main source of ender pearls. Here's how to handle them.

Max Gear ChecklistThe best enchantments for every Minecraft armor piece, tool and weapon, as a checklist you can tick off

Why they attack

  • Looking at an enderman's head for a moment, from up to 64 blocks away.
  • Hitting it.

Wearing a carved pumpkin stops the looking part, but makes your view harder to see through.

Staying safe

2.9blocks tall
20hearts of health
  • Endermen are 2.9 blocks tall. Stand under a 2 block high gap and they can't reach you.
  • Water and rain hurt them. Stand in water and they'll teleport away.
  • They dodge arrows by teleporting, so use a sword.
Roof trickFight an angry enderman from under a 2 block high roof. You can hit its legs, but it can't get in to reach you.

Ender pearls

Each enderman drops 0 to 1 ender pearl, more with Looting. They're most common in warped forests in the Nether and all over the End.

Block thieves

Endermen pick up and move some blocks, like dirt, grass, sand, gravel and pumpkins. That's why you sometimes find holes in the ground.

Cheat sheet

  • Don't look at their face
  • Carved pumpkin = safe to look
  • 2 block high roof and water keep you safe
  • Warped forests for pearl hunting
