Where they spawn

Ghasts spawn in Nether wastes, soul sand valleys and basalt deltas, usually over open lava and big caves.

Hitting fireballs back

  1. Watch for the ghast's face to go red and the shooting sound.
  2. When the fireball gets close, hit it with a melee attack or shoot it with an arrow.
  3. It flies back. A direct hit usually kills the ghast instantly.

Return to SenderKilling a ghast with its own fireball gets the advancement and always drops the Tears music disc. Do it over solid ground so the disc doesn't fall in lava.

Protect your portal

Ghast fireballs can turn your Nether portal off. Build it from cobblestone walls and keep a flint and steel to relight it.

Drops

  • Ghast tear: 0 to 1, for regeneration potions and end crystals.
  • Gunpowder: 0 to 2.
Drops over lavaGhasts often die over lava and lose their drops. Lure them over land first.
