How to Use a Grindstone

Strip bad enchantments, get XP back, reset anvil costs.

A grindstone surrounded by an enchanted book, a bottle o' enchanting, an iron sword and an anvil on spruce planks
Quick answer
  • A Grindstone removes all enchantments except curses.
  • You get some of the XP back.
  • It also resets an item's anvil repair cost.

Got a sword with junk enchantments, or an item that's "Too Expensive" in the anvil? The grindstone fixes both.

Removing enchantments

  1. Put the item in the grindstone.
  2. Take out the clean version.
  3. XP orbs pop out for some of the enchantments you removed.
Curses stayCurse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing can't be removed.

Repairing

Put two of the same item in the grindstone. You get one item with both durabilities added, plus a 5% bonus. Enchantments are removed.

Use an anvil for enchanted gearThe anvil keeps enchantments when you combine items. Only use the grindstone for plain items or ones you want wiped.

Resetting anvil costs

Every time you use an anvil on an item, its next repair costs more. A grindstone resets that penalty, so you can start fresh on an item that has become too expensive.

XP back

You usually get back between half and all of the enchantment levels you removed, as XP.
