Happy Ghast Guide

Soak a dried ghast and you get a flying mount for four.

A dried ghast surrounded by a ghast tear, a snowball, a water bucket and a lead on soul sand
Quick answer
  • Get a Dried ghast block from soul sand valleys, or craft one.
  • Place it in water. About 20 minutes later it becomes a ghastling.
  • Grow it up, put a harness on it and fly with up to 4 players.

The happy ghast was added in Java 1.21.6 and Bedrock 1.21.90. It's a friendly ghast you can ride, and the best mount for building in the sky.

Getting a dried ghast

  • Find one next to Nether fossils in soul sand valleys.
  • Craft one from 8 Ghast tear items and 1 soul sand.
  • Piglins can also barter one, rarely.

Hydrating it

  1. Place the dried ghast in water so it's waterlogged.
  2. Wait. It goes through a few stages of hydration.
  3. After about 20 minutes it turns into a baby ghastling.
Keep it wetIf you remove the water, it slowly dries out again.

Growing it up

A ghastling takes about 20 minutes to become an adult. Feed it Snowball items to speed it up.

Flying

  • Put a harness on an adult happy ghast to ride it.
  • It flies the way you look. Press jump to go straight up.
