Horse Stats and Breeding

Every horse is different. Here's how to find and breed a fast one.

A saddle surrounded by a golden carrot, a golden apple and iron and diamond horse armour on grass
Quick answer
  • Tame a horse by getting on it again and again until hearts appear.
  • Speed, jump and health are random for every horse.
  • Breed two good horses with golden carrots or golden apples to aim for a better foal.

Horses are the fastest way to travel overland before you get elytra. But a slow horse is barely faster than walking, so it pays to pick a good one.

Taming

  1. Get on the horse with an empty hand.
  2. It will throw you off. Get back on.
  3. Keep going until hearts appear. Feeding it apples, sugar, wheat or golden food first makes this quicker.
  4. Put a Saddle on it to ride and steer.

The game doesn't show these numbers. Try the horse out: watch how fast it runs and how high it jumps.

Breeding a better horse

Feed two tamed horses a Golden carrot or Golden apple each. The foal's stats are roughly the average of its parents, plus a bit of random luck either way.

Keep the best, breed againBreed your two best horses, keep the foal if it beats a parent, and repeat. Feeding the foal makes it grow up faster than the usual 20 minutes.

Protecting it

Horses can wear horse armour, like Iron horse armor or Diamond horse armor, found in chests around the world.

Cheat sheet

  • Mount repeatedly to tame
  • Best speed: about 14.6 blocks per second
  • Breed with golden carrots or golden apples
