Quick answer
- Place 4 Soul sand blocks in a T and 3 Wither skeleton skull items on top.
- It explodes when it spawns, so run. It has 150 hearts on Java.
- It always drops a Nether star, which you need for a beacon.
The Wither is the hardest boss you summon yourself. Prepare properly and it's a fair fight.

Summoning it
- Collect 3 wither skeleton skulls from wither skeletons in Nether fortresses.
- Build a T of soul sand or soul soil.
- Place the 3 skulls on top. The last skull you place summons it.
- Get away. After about 11 seconds it explodes.
Pick the spotIts blue skulls break blocks, even obsidian. Fight it underground or far from your base.
What to bring
- A sword with Smite. The Wither is undead.
- Strong armour, golden apples and healing potions.
- Milk bucket to clear the Wither effect.
- A bow with Power for the first half.
The second phase
Below half health, the Wither gets armour that makes it immune to arrows and tridents. Switch to your sword.

Why fight it
The nether star crafts a Beacon, which gives you Haste, Speed, Strength and more near your base. The Wither also gives 50 XP.
