Slime chunks underground, swamps on a full moon.

Quick answer
  • Slimes spawn in slime chunks below Y 40, in any light.
  • They also spawn in swamps at night, most on a full moon.
  • Only small slimes drop slimeballs.

You need slimeballs for sticky pistons and slime blocks. Finding slimes is easy once you know where to look.

Slime chunks

About 1 in 10 chunks is a slime chunk. Slimes spawn there below Y 40, no matter how bright it is.

Look for them while cavingIf you keep meeting slimes in the same underground area, you've found a slime chunk. Mark it.

On Java, slime chunks depend on the world seed. On Bedrock, they're in the same places in every world.

Swamps

Slimes spawn in swamps and mangrove swamps between Y 51 and 69, at light level 7 or less.

Splitting and drops

  • Large slimes split into 2 to 4 medium slimes.
  • Medium slimes split into 2 to 4 small slimes.
  • Small slimes drop 0 to 2 slimeballs.
Use a frogA frog that eats a small slime always drops 1 slimeball.

What slimeballs make

Sticky piston and Slime block are the big ones. Slime blocks are also great for bouncing and flying machines. Leads no longer need slimeballs on Java 1.21.6 and later.
