How to Grow Trees

Light, space and sometimes 4 saplings.

An oak sapling with spruce, dark oak and cherry saplings and a mangrove propagule on oak logs
Quick answer
  • Saplings need light level 9 or more and enough space above.
  • Dark oak and pale oak need 4 saplings in a 2 by 2 square.
  • Spruce and jungle make giant trees from a 2 by 2 square.

Wood is the first thing you need and the thing you'll keep needing. Growing your own trees saves a lot of walking.

What a sapling needs

  • Plant it on dirt, grass, podzol, moss or mud.
  • Light level 9 or higher. Torches work at night.
  • Enough empty space above for the tree.
Speed it upUse bone meal on a sapling for a chance to grow it straight away.
