- An
Anvil repairs with the base material and keeps enchantments. - The crafting grid and
Grindstone combine two items but remove enchantments. - Mending repairs gear with XP, so you never need to repair by hand.
Everything breaks eventually. Here's how to fix it without losing your best enchantments.
Every method
| Method | Keeps enchantments | Costs XP |
|---|---|---|
| Anvil + material | Yes | Yes |
| Anvil + same item | Yes, combines them | Yes |
| Crafting grid | No | No |
| No, gives some XP back | No | |
| Mending | Yes | Uses XP orbs |
Repairing with materials
Put the item in an anvil with its material: diamonds for diamond gear, iron ingots for iron, and so on. Each unit of material restores a quarter of its durability.
Too expensive!Every anvil use makes the next one cost more. Eventually the anvil refuses. Mending avoids this.
Mending
Gear with Mending uses XP orbs you pick up to repair itself. Put it on everything you use a lot.
Cheat sheet
- Anvil keeps enchantments
- Crafting grid and grindstone wipe them
