How to Tame a Wolf

A few bones gets you a loyal fighter with 20 hearts.

A bone surrounded by wolf armour, an armadillo scute, a cooked porkchop and red dye on grass
Quick answer
  • Feed a wild wolf bones. Each bone has a 1 in 3 chance to tame it.
  • Tamed wolves get a red collar and jump from 4 hearts to 20 hearts.
  • Heal and breed them with meat, and protect them with wolf armour.

A tamed wolf follows you everywhere and attacks whatever you hit. Here's how to get one and keep it alive.

Taming

  1. Collect a few Bone items from skeletons.
  2. Hold a bone and use it on a wild wolf. Don't hit the wolf first.
  3. Hearts mean it worked, smoke means try again.

Feed your wolf meat to heal it. Rotten flesh and raw chicken are safe for wolves.

To breed, feed meat to two tamed wolves at full health. The puppy grows up in 20 minutes.

Wolf armour

Craft Wolf armor from Armadillo scute items, which armadillos drop when you brush them. It has 64 durability and each scute repairs 8.

Make it yoursUse any dye on your wolf to change its collar colour.

Where to find each wolf

There are 9 wolf variants, each from a different biome.
