Kelp Farming and Dried Kelp

Grows on its own underwater and turns into free fuel.

Kelp surrounded by dried kelp, a dried kelp block, bone meal and a furnace on water
Quick answer
  • Kelp grows in most oceans, up to 26 blocks tall.
  • Break one piece and everything above it breaks too.
  • Smelt it into Dried kelp, then craft 9 into a Dried kelp block that smelts 20 items as fuel.

Kelp is one of the easiest things to farm. It grows by itself underwater, and dried kelp blocks are a renewable furnace fuel.

Where it grows

Kelp grows in all oceans except warm, frozen and deep frozen ones. Wild kelp can be anything from 2 to 26 blocks tall.

Farming it

  1. Plant kelp on a block at the bottom of water.
  2. Let it grow up. Bone meal adds one block each use.
  3. Break the second block from the bottom. Everything above drops and floats up.
Easy to automateKelp items float to the surface, so they're easy to collect with hoppers at the top of the water.

Real profitRemember that smelting the kelp costs fuel too. A dried kelp block still gives you more than it took to make, so a big kelp farm is free fuel forever.

Kelp also goes in a composter, with a 30% chance per piece.
