Lectern Guide

A book stand for readers, librarians and redstone.

A lectern surrounded by a book and quill, a bookshelf, an oak slab and a comparator on bookshelves
Quick answer
  • Craft a Lectern from 4 wooden slabs and 1 bookshelf.
  • Place a book on it and anyone can read it.
  • It's the job site for librarians.

Lecterns let you share a book with everyone on a server. They're also how you get a librarian with the enchanted book you want.

Villager Trade PredictorEstimate upcoming librarian enchanted-book trades from your world seed, or plan a whole book hall with rerolls, villagers and emeralds

Books on lecterns

  • Use a book and quill or a written book on the lectern to place it.
  • Anyone can open it and read it.
  • Take the book back from the reading screen.

Librarians

  1. Place a lectern near an unemployed villager.
  2. Check its first trade. If it's not the book you want, break the lectern and place it again.
  3. Once you trade with it, the villager keeps the job forever.
RerollingRerolling only works before you've traded with the librarian. Don't trade until you see the book you want.

Redstone

A comparator reads how far through the book the open page is. Turning a page also sends a short redstone pulse.

Cheat sheet

  • 4 slabs + 1 bookshelf
  • Shared reading for everyone
  • Librarian job site
  • Reroll before trading
