How to Farm Mushrooms

Keep it dark, or use mycelium. Mushrooms do the rest.

Quick answer
  • Mushrooms spread at light level 12 or lower.
  • On Mycelium or Podzol they grow in any light.
  • Bone meal turns a mushroom into a huge mushroom if there's room.

Mushrooms are an easy food source that you can farm underground with almost no effort.

  • Mushrooms can't spread to spots with light level 13 or more.
  • On mycelium, podzol and nylium they're fine in full light.
Underground farmA dark room with stone floors works well. Mushrooms spread on their own over time.

How they spread

Mushrooms randomly spread to nearby blocks. They stop when there are already 5 of the same type close by, so harvest regularly to keep them spreading.

Huge mushrooms

  1. Plant a red or Brown mushroom on dirt, grass, mycelium or podzol.
  2. Clear a big space above it, about 7×7 wide and 8 tall to be safe.
  3. Use bone meal. It grows into a huge mushroom.

Break the caps for loads of mushrooms at once.

What to make

Craft a red mushroom, a brown mushroom and a bowl into Mushroom stew. Or find mooshrooms on mushroom fields and milk them with a bowl for free stew.

Cheat sheet
