How to Get a Name Tag

Name a mob and it stays forever. Some names do something special.

A name tag surrounded by an anvil, paper, an iron nugget and white wool on spruce planks
Quick answer
  • Craft a Name tag from 1 paper and 1 nugget (iron, gold or copper).
  • Rename it in an Anvil for 1 level, then use it on a mob.
  • Named mobs never despawn.

Name tags keep your favourite mobs safe from despawning, and a few secret names change how mobs look.

Getting one

  • Craft it: 1 paper and 1 Iron nugget, gold nugget or copper nugget.
  • Fishing: name tags are a treasure catch.
  • Chests: dungeons and mineshafts.
  • Wandering traders sometimes sell them.

Using it

  1. Put the name tag in an anvil and type a name. It costs 1 level.
  2. Use the tag on any mob. The tag is used up.
  3. The mob keeps its name and won't despawn.
Rename a stackRenaming a whole stack in an anvil still costs just 1 level.
