Observer Guide

It watches the block in front and pulses when it changes.

An observer surrounded by nether quartz, redstone, sugar cane and a piston
Quick answer
  • Craft an Observer from 6 cobblestone, 2 redstone dust and 1 nether quartz.
  • It watches the block its face points at and sends a short pulse out the back when it changes.
  • Use it for automatic sugar cane, pumpkin and melon farms.

Observers are the easiest way to make redstone react to the world. They power most simple automatic farms.

How it works

  • The face looks at one block.
  • When that block changes (placed, broken, grown, turned on), it fires.
  • The pulse comes out the back with full strength 15.
Placing itThe face points towards you when you place it, so stand where you want it to look.

Farms

  1. Plant sugar cane with an observer watching the second block up.
  2. Put a Piston next to that block, powered by the observer.
  3. When the cane grows, the piston breaks it. Hoppers collect the drops.
