Pumpkin and Melon Farming

Plant once, harvest forever. Just leave a free block next to each stem.

A pumpkin surrounded by a melon, a melon slice, pumpkin seeds and a pumpkin pie on dirt
Quick answer
  • Plant the seeds on farmland. The stem grows the fruit on a free block next to it.
  • The stem stays, so it keeps making more.
  • Break a Melon for 3 to 7 slices.

Pumpkins and melons grow differently from other crops. Once a stem is grown, it keeps producing forever.

Planting

  1. Plant Pumpkin seeds or melon seeds on farmland near water.
  2. Leave a free block beside each stem: dirt, grass, farmland or mud.
  3. When the stem is grown, a pumpkin or melon appears on that free block.

RowsPlant stems in a row with an empty dirt row on each side. Every stem gets two spots for fruit.

Harvesting

Break the fruit, not the stem. An axe is fastest. Bone meal speeds up the stem, but it won't make fruit appear.

What to make

  • Melon slice: quick food, or craft 9 back into a melon.
  • Pumpkin pie: pumpkin, sugar and an egg.
  • Carved pumpkin: use shears on a pumpkin. Needed for golems.
