- Craft a
Redstone torch from 1 redstone dust on top of 1 stick. - It gives a full strength 15 signal and works as a NOT gate: power its block and it turns off.
- On Java, flicking it off more than 8 times in 3 seconds burns it out.
Redstone torches are the oldest power source in redstone. They're also how you flip a signal from on to off.
What it powers
- The block directly above it, strongly enough to power things around that block.
- Redstone dust and parts right next to it.
- Not the block it's stuck to.
15signal strength
7light level
0.1 sto switch
Inverting a signal
- Put the torch on the side of a solid block.
- Power that block with a
Lever or redstone. - The torch turns off. Remove the power and it turns back on.
Any power from 1 to 15 switches it off. That's how you build doors that close when a button is pressed, or lamps that switch on when a lever goes off.
Can't be switched offA torch on glass, a fence, a slab or stairs stays on forever, because those blocks can't carry power.
Burnout
| Edition | When it burns out |
|---|---|
| Java | Turned off more than 8 times in 3 seconds |
| Bedrock | Only when it powers itself with no delay |
A burned out torch comes back on after a block update next to it. On Java, it puffs smoke when it burns out.
Fast clocksA torch clock with no repeaters flickers too fast and burns out on Java. Add a repeater to slow it down.
