Roof Building Tips

Stairs, slabs and a one block overhang.

Dark oak stairs surrounded by spruce stairs, stone brick stairs, a dark oak slab and a spruce trapdoor on dark oak planks
Quick answer
  • Build roofs from stairs and slabs, never full blocks.
  • Overhang the walls by one block so the roof casts a shadow.
  • Pick a darker block than the walls so the roof stands out.

The roof makes or breaks a build. A few rules turn a box into a house.

Block Gradient GeneratorMake smooth Minecraft block gradients between any two blocks, from 4 to 12 steps

Tips

  1. Overhang the walls by one block on every side.
  2. Use upside down stairs under the overhang to make it look thick.
  3. Finish the ridge at the top with slabs or a different stair.
  4. Break up long roofs with a dormer window or a chimney.
GradientsMix 2 or 3 similar stairs on a big roof for texture, like dark oak with a little spruce.

Chimneys

A cobblestone or brick chimney poking through the roof adds a lot. Put a campfire on top for smoke.
