- In Hardcore you get one life. Die and the world is over.
- Play slower than normal: light everything, keep food high, and never fight at the edge of a drop.
- Get
shield,
water bucket, Feather Falling and totems as early as you can.
Hardcore is Minecraft with real stakes. The difficulty is locked on Hard and there's no respawn. Here's what keeps most players alive.
Your first day
- Get wood and stone tools straight away.
- Find food: kill a few animals and cook the meat.
- Get or make a
bed (3 wool + 3 planks) and sleep the first night. - Dig into a hill and block yourself in if you can't get a bed.
Early gear that saves lives
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Blocks creepers, arrows and most melee hits | |
| Stops fall damage and puts out fire | |
| Iron armour | Your first big survival boost |
| Feather Falling IV boots | Falls are a top Hardcore killer |
| A literal extra life |
More on totems: how the Totem of Undying works and how to farm them.
Habits that keep you alive
- Light everything. Mobs only spawn in total darkness on Java.
- Keep 9+ drumsticks so you keep healing.
- Never mine straight down. You can fall into caves or lava.
- Sleep every few nights so phantoms don't spawn.
- Retreat early. Walking away at half health beats a risky win.
Creepers in the darkMost early deaths are a creeper you didn't hear. Light your base fully and listen for the hiss.
Before the Nether
- Bring Fire Resistance potions and blocks to bridge.
- Wear one piece of gold armour so piglins don't attack.
- Build your own portal on the other side so you know where it is.
Save your coordinatesNote your base, portals and spare gear stash. Getting lost at night is how a lot of runs end.
Cheat sheet
- Bed on night one
- Shield + water bucket ASAP
- Light up, eat up, sleep regularly
- Never dig straight down
