How to Make Concrete

Sand, gravel, dye and water. The cleanest building block in the game.

A water bucket in front of a wall of white, cyan and orange concrete and concrete powder, with sand, gravel and dyes
Quick answer
  • Craft 4 sand, 4 gravel and 1 dye into 8 concrete powder.
  • Concrete powder turns into concrete when it touches water.
  • There are 16 colours, one for each dye.

Concrete gives you flat, bright colours with no texture, which makes it great for modern builds and pixel art.

Red sand doesn't work. On Bedrock you can also use bone meal, lapis lazuli, cocoa beans or an ink sac instead of the matching dye.

Turning it into concrete

  1. Place concrete powder so it touches water, still or flowing.
  2. It instantly hardens into concrete.
  3. Mine the concrete with a pickaxe.
Fast conversionBuild a wall of powder next to a line of water, then mine it as it hardens. Place, mine, repeat.
Rain doesn't countRain and splash bottles don't harden it, and powder dropped as an item stays powder.

Concrete powder falls like sand, so it needs a block under it. Hardened concrete doesn't fall.

Building with it

Mix concrete with terracotta and wool for builds with a bit more texture, or use it on its own for clean, modern looks.
