- Java usernames are 3 to 16 characters: letters, numbers and underscores only.
- You can change your name, but only once every 30 days.
- Your UUID is a hidden ID that never changes, even when your name does.
Want a new name, or need to check if one is free? Here's how Minecraft names and UUIDs work on Java.
Username rules
3–16characters long
A–Z 0–9 _the only characters allowed
30days between name changes
- No spaces, dashes or emojis.
- Names aren't case-sensitive for taking them: if "Steve" is taken, "steve" is too.
What a UUID is
A UUID is a long ID made of 32 letters and numbers split up by dashes. It belongs to your account forever. Servers use it to remember you, so changing your name doesn't wipe your ranks, homes or bans.
Need someone's UUID?Type their name into the player lookup. It also shows their skin and cape.
How to change your name
- Check the name is free with the player lookup.
- Sign in at minecraft.net and open your profile.
- Change your profile name and save. You'll have to wait 30 days to change it again.
Your old name isn't yours any moreAfter you change it, your old name can eventually be claimed by someone else. If you want it back, don't wait too long.
Bedrock is different
Bedrock uses your Xbox gamertag, not a Java username. Change it through your Microsoft or Xbox account settings.
