How to Farm Nether Wart

No wart, no potions. Here's how to never run out.

Nether wart surrounded by soul sand, blaze powder, a potion and a nether wart block on soul sand
Quick answer
  • Find Nether wart growing in Nether fortresses and bastion remnants.
  • It only grows on Soul sand, but it works in any dimension.
  • It doesn't need light, and bone meal doesn't work on it.

Almost every potion starts with nether wart. Once you have a small farm at home, you never need to go back to the Nether for it.

Finding it

Look for small red plants on soul sand in Nether fortresses, often by the staircases, and in bastion remnants. Break them to collect the wart.

Planting a farm

  1. Bring back some soul sand. Soul soil doesn't work.
  2. Place it anywhere, even in the Overworld. No water or light needed.
  3. Plant nether wart on top and wait.

No shortcutsBone meal does nothing on nether wart. It grows at its own pace.

What it's for

Put nether wart in a brewing stand with water bottles to make awkward potions, the base for almost every useful potion. You'll also need Blaze powder to fuel the stand.

Spare wart can go into a Nether wart block, made from 9 wart, for red builds.
