Paintings Guide

The painting you get depends on the space you give it.

A painting surrounded by a stick, white wool, a torch and an oak door on dark oak planks
Quick answer
  • Craft a Painting from 8 sticks and 1 wool of any colour.
  • Placing one picks a random painting that fits the space.
  • To get a big one, place it on a big empty wall.

Paintings are cheap decorations, but getting the one you want takes a little trick.

Crafting

8 sticks around 1 wool in a crafting table. The wool colour doesn't matter.

Picking a painting

  1. The game picks a random painting that fits the wall space you clicked on.
  2. Limit the space with blocks to force a size. A 1 by 1 gap only fits small ones.
  3. Don't like it? Break it and place it again.
CreativeOn Java, the creative inventory has each painting as its own item so you can pick exactly.

Secret doors

Paintings don't block movement, so you can walk through one. Hang a painting over a doorway to hide a secret room. Placing it needs a block behind it, so put it up first, then remove the blocks behind it.

Signs trickYou can also hang a painting on signs placed in the doorway, so the painting has something to stick to.

Cheat sheet

  • 8 sticks + 1 wool
  • The space decides the size
  • Break and replace to reroll
  • Walk through them for secret doors
