Starter House Tips

Small, safe and better looking than a dirt box.

An oak door surrounded by an oak log, cobblestone, a red bed and a torch on oak planks
Quick answer
  • Mix at least 3 blocks: logs for corners, planks for walls, cobblestone for the base.
  • Give it a pitched roof made of stairs, not a flat one.
  • Inside, put a bed, a crafting table, a furnace and chests.

Your first house doesn't need to be big. A few simple tricks make it look far better and keep you safe.

Picking a spot

  • Near water, trees and flat ground.
  • Close to a village if you can, for trades and food.
  • Away from caves that open next to your door.

Building tips

  1. Build a cobblestone base one block high.
  2. Use logs on the corners and planks for the walls.
  3. Push windows one block in from the wall for depth.
  4. Make the roof from stairs, overhanging the walls by one block.
  5. Add details: trapdoor shutters, fences, flower pots and lanterns.
